NEPA and Public Involvement

The BLM is preparing an Environmental Assessment as part of the planning process to understand the effects implementation level actions may have regarding resources found within the Gold Butte National Monument planning area in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). NEPA requires federal agencies to assess the environmental effects of their proposed actions prior to making decisions.

During public scoping the BLM identified and worked with various stakeholders including state, county, local and tribal governments, and the public. The scoping process helps the BLM in the early identification of potentially affected resources, issues and potential alternatives to be considered in the Environmental Assessment. The figure below provides an overview and timeline of the NEPA process and indicates when the public can provide comments and input.

An Environmental Assessment will be developed as part of the planning process to understand the effects implementation level actions may have regarding resources found within the Gold Butte National Monument planning area. An integral component of this process is public involvement. Opportunities for public involvement are described below and on the how to provide public input page.

Virtual Public Scoping Meetings

A provision of the proclamation requires that the Bureau of Land Management provide opportunities for maximum public involvement during development of the plan. As such, the Bureau of Land Management Las Vegas Field Office developed this site and held two virtual public scoping meetings to involve the public in the early stages of the proposed Implementation Plan. The virtual public scoping meetings were held online on November 29 and 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. PST. Videos of the public scoping meetings are available here on YouTube: November 29 and November 30.
