Welcome to the NM Unit draft EIS virtual public meeting

The Bureau of Reclamation and the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (ISC) released a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on April 24, 2020 to consider a proposal by the New Mexico Central Arizona Project (CAP) Entity (Entity) to construct, operate and maintain a New Mexico Unit of the CAP (NM Unit) through water diversion, storage, conveyance, and delivery infrastructure. The Arizona Water Settlements Act of 2004, Public Law 108-451 (AWSA), authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to contract with water users in southwestern New Mexico for water from the Gila River, its tributaries such as the San Francisco River, and underground water sources. The NM Unit is the proposed infrastructure that would divert Gila River water in New Mexico for this purpose. Reclamation and ISC analyzed the impacts of various alternatives for construction, operation, and maintenance of the proposed NM Unit in the draft EIS. The draft EIS is available for a 45-day comment period ending on June 8, 2020.

More details on the NM Unit project, including maps and Google Earth files, are provided in the Project Alternatives station.
