In December 2021, EMPSi facilitated four virtual public meetings for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to inform the public about its proposal to designate Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument as a national marine sanctuary.

The meetings provided participants with the opportunity to learn more about the proposed designation, hear from NOAA’s co-manager agencies, and provide verbal public comments either in English or in the Hawaiian language.
